Our editorial team answers questions about the review process, property inspections, and how we verify guest feedback. Whether you are a traveller planning a coastal stay or a property owner who wants to understand our rating criteria, we are here to clarify how things work.
We usually respond within one working day. For more detailed queries about a specific property or neighbourhood, allow a little extra time while we check our inspection notes.

Visit the help centreEvery coastal stay we publish goes through the same sequence of checks. The timeline below shows what happens between the first nomination and the final rating going live.
Weeks 1–2
We start with guest nominations, owner submissions, and our own scouting along the coast. Each property is checked against basic criteria: beach proximity, maintenance history, and whether the listing matches reality. Only about one in four makes it past this stage.
Weeks 3–4
An editor visits unannounced, stays at least one night, and works through a standard checklist: room condition, noise levels at different hours, water pressure, bedding quality, and the actual walk to the nearest beach access point. We photograph everything as we find it.
Weeks 5–6
We cross-check recent guest feedback from multiple booking sources and contact previous visitors directly where possible. Ratings are then compiled across five fixed categories, from value for money to seasonal practicality, before the write-up is drafted and reviewed.
Week 7
The final review goes live with a clear publication date and a note on the season of the visit. We revisit each property after twelve months or after any major renovation to confirm the rating still holds. If conditions have changed, we update the page rather than leaving stale advice in place.
What this means for you
When you read a rating on this site, it reflects a recent physical visit, not a summary of old listings. The dates on each review tell you exactly when the inspection happened, so you can judge how current the information is for your own travel plans.
Every review on Sean Water Views follows the same route. We do not rely on submitted feedback alone. Each stay is inspected in person, measured against the same checklist, and written up only after we have verified the details with the property manager.
We pick coastal properties that look promising from listings and local knowledge, then contact the owner or manager directly. No anonymous bookings, no surprise visits. The request states exactly what we plan to assess.
We walk through every room, check the condition of fittings and bedding, test the water pressure, and measure the actual distance to the nearest public beach access. Noise levels are noted at different times of day.
Recent visitor comments are compared against what we found on site. If a recurring complaint matches our own observation, it goes into the review. If a claim seems exaggerated, we say so plainly.
A summer stay in Plettenberg Bay differs from a winter one in Hermanus. We add notes on expected wind patterns, water temperature, and local holiday crowds so the rating makes sense for your travel dates.
The written review is checked against our notes, photos, and the property's own description. We confirm names, distances, and any claims about facilities before anything is published.
Each property gets a final score across room condition, beach access, noise, maintenance, and value. The review stays online with its inspection date so you know how recent the assessment is.
Properties that refuse an on-site visit, listings with no verifiable contact, or stays that have not been active in the past year are excluded. We also skip places where the owner asks us to remove negative findings.
