How Sean Water Views came together
We started with a simple frustration: too many seaside listings looked perfect online and disappointed in person. So we began visiting properties ourselves, taking notes, and publishing what we found. This is the path from that first idea to the review library we run today.
March 2021
Two of us drove the Garden Route over ten days, visiting eleven advertised ocean-view rentals. We photographed every room, timed the walks to the beach, and talked to neighbours about noise and safety. That trip produced our first set of honest ratings and the template for every review since.
September 2021
We opened the platform to verified guest feedback. Every submission is checked against a booking confirmation or a stay receipt before it appears. This step was about keeping the reviews useful for travellers who need to trust what they read before committing to a coastal stay.
June 2022
Reader requests pushed us north and east. We added properties along the KwaZulu-Natal coast and the Cape West Coast, each inspected with the same checklist: room condition, beach access, maintenance, noise, and whether the price matches the experience. The team grew to four regular inspectors.
February 2023
Ratings alone did not answer the questions travellers asked us most. We started writing practical guides on wind patterns, whale season timing, and which coastal neighbourhoods suit families versus couples. These notes now sit alongside every property review for context.
October 2023
The hundredth property review marked a shift in how we work. Property managers began reaching out to us directly, asking for a pre-listing inspection before they advertise. We kept our independence, but the demand confirmed that owners also value a clear standard for what counts as a good coastal stay.
Today
Our team now covers the full South African coastline, from the Northern Cape shores to the Wild Coast. Every property still gets a physical visit, and every guest review still gets verified. The mission remains the same as that first Garden Route trip: give travellers a clear, honest picture before they book.
Why Sean Water Views exists
Sean Water Views started with a simple frustration: too many seaside listings look perfect online and disappoint in person. We decided to do something about it. Our team visits each property along the South African coastline, checks the details that matter, and publishes what we find. No sponsored praise, no polished marketing language. Just a clear picture of what a stay will actually be like.
A property can look great in photographs and still fall short on the details. That is why our inspections follow a consistent checklist. We measure the actual walking distance to the nearest beach access point, test the noise levels at night, and look closely at maintenance standards that photographs tend to hide. We evaluate the condition of bedding, the reliability of hot water, and whether the braai area is genuinely usable. Value for money only gets a fair rating once we have seen the property in person.
Our reviews also cover the surrounding neighbourhood. We note whether the street is quiet after dark, how far the closest shops are, and what the parking situation looks like during peak season. These are the practical details that shape a coastal holiday, and they rarely appear in the official listing.
We do not accept payment from property owners to adjust a rating. Every property is reviewed on the same criteria, and our editorial team retains full control over the final verdict. If a stay has genuine strengths, we say so. If there are compromises, we describe them plainly so travellers can decide whether those trade-offs work for their situation.
Guest feedback plays an important role in our process. We collect verified reviews from previous visitors and compare them against our own observations. When a pattern emerges, we investigate further and update the property profile accordingly. This combination of professional inspection and real guest experience gives a more complete picture than either source alone.
The goal is straightforward: help people choose a coastal stay with confidence. Instead of scrolling through dozens of listings and wondering which ones are accurate, travellers can read our assessments and get a realistic sense of what to expect. We also share practical guidance on seasonal weather patterns, local dining spots, and safety considerations for different coastal neighbourhoods. That way, the decision is based on solid information rather than guesswork.
Over time, we want Sean Water Views to become a reliable reference point for anyone planning a seaside getaway along the South African coast. Whether it is a family looking for a safe swimming beach, a couple seeking a quiet clifftop retreat, or a group wanting easy access to local restaurants, our reviews are designed to make the planning process simpler and the stay itself more enjoyable.
The people behind the reviews
Sean Water Views is run by a handful of editors who split their time between Cape Town and the Garden Route. Every property we rate has been inspected in person, and every review you read reflects a real stay or a scheduled site visit. No remote assessments, no recycled descriptions.
Lead Editor, Western Cape
Megan has spent the last eight years covering coastal accommodation from False Bay to the Cederberg. She handles the initial property screening, checks the accuracy of listing descriptions, and coordinates the seasonal weather notes that accompany each review.
Field Inspector, Garden Route
Thabo is the one who measures the walk to the beach, tests the water pressure, and checks whether the braai area is actually clean. His inspection notes form the backbone of our maintenance and value-for-money ratings.
Guest Feedback Coordinator
Lindiwe verifies every guest submission before it goes live. She cross-checks booking dates, follows up on vague complaints, and filters out anything that looks like a promotional post from a property owner.
We do not accept payment for favourable coverage, and we say so in every property communication. When a review is based on a complimentary stay, we disclose that clearly in the text. Our editors visit each property at least once every eighteen months to confirm that nothing has changed since the last assessment.
What started as a personal notebook of coastal stays along the Western Cape has grown into an independent review platform. The story is straightforward: we kept returning to the same stretch of coastline, kept comparing notes, and eventually decided the notes should be public.
2016
A two-week drive from Cape Town to Plettenberg Bay, staying at eleven different rentals. We photographed every room, timed the walks to the beach, and wrote down what the listings did not mention. That trip became the template for how we still work today.
2019
We realised casual notes were not enough. Every property now gets scored on the same criteria: room condition, beach access, noise levels, maintenance, and value. The scoring sheet is shared with property managers before publication, so there are no surprises.
2022
The editorial team still handles the inspections, but we opened the platform to verified guests. Each submission is checked against booking records before it appears. The mix of professional assessments and real visitor experiences gives a fuller picture of each stay.
2024
After seven years focused on the Western Cape, we added properties along the KwaZulu-Natal coast and the Wild Coast. The same inspection routine applies, though the seasonal patterns and safety considerations differ. The local guides now cover dining and neighbourhood notes for each region.
We still pay for our own stays. No property manager can influence a rating by offering a discount or a free night. The inspection checklist from 2016 is still in use, with only minor edits.
Every review page lists the date of the visit and the name of the inspector. If a property changes hands or undergoes renovation, we schedule a fresh visit rather than relying on old notes.
